Editorship
Professor Jo-Shu Chang is the Chair Professor and Vice President of Tunghai University, as well as an Adjunct Chair Professor at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Irvine in 1993. In 2019-2021, he was selected as a Highly Cited Researcher by the Web of Science Group. He also ranked first in Taiwan's Biology and Biochemistry category by Research.com in 2021 and 2022 and was included in Stanford University's List of World's Top 2% Scientists from 2020 to 2022.
Professor Chang's research interests span biochemical engineering, environmental biotechnology, and applied microbiology, with a recent emphasis on microalgae-based CO2 utilization for biofuels and biorefineries. He served as President of Taiwan's Society of Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering (BEST) from 2019 to 2022 and is the leading PI of Taiwan's National Energy Project, having established a world-leading team in the area of microalgae biorefinery and bio-based CO2 utilization. He also leads the Negative Carbon Technology and Biomass Energy task groups for Taiwan's 2050 Net Zero Pathway Task Forces.
Professor Chang has received numerous prestigious domestic and international academic awards, including three Distinguished Research Awards from Taiwan's MOST. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) (2015) and the International Forum of Industrial Bioprocessing (IFIBiop) (2018). He has been an executive committee member of the Asia Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB) since 2008. Professor Chang has served as the Editor/Associate Editor of five renowned international journals and is an editorial board member of nearly 10 SCI-indexed journals. He has published over 660 SCI journal papers, with a total citation count of over 38,354 (Web of Science) and 57,299 (Google Scholar). He has an h-index of 100 (Web of Science) and 126 (Google Scholar). He has also authored ten books and owns nearly 50 patents. Many of his research outcomes have been practically applied in the industry or have been commercialized.
Dr. Chart Chiemchaisri is a Professor at Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand. He received his Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Chulalongkorn University, Master degree in Environmental Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, and Doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering from The University of Tokyo, Japan. He also obtained Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Assessment from Imperial College, University of London.
His specializations are in the areas of wastewater treatment and solid waste management. He has extensively conducted research on development of membrane bioreactor technology and development of sustainable solid waste landfill and published more than 150 international peer-reviewed journals in those fields. He also served as professional engineer in more than 80 projects related to feasibility study and detailed engineering design of wastewater and solid waste management systems, environmental impact assessment and implementation of clean technology in industries.
He was also served as expert for international organizations including United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) focusing on greenhouse gas emissions from waste sector, and served as regional environmental expert for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
Dr. Cheng-Di Dong is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Marine Environmental Engineering, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), Taiwan. Dr. Dong obtained Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Delaware, USA in 1993 and M.S. in Environmental Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA in 1990. Dr. Dong was Dean of the College of Hydrosphere of NKUST. Dr. Dong’s research focuses on waste-to-resources, biotechnology, nanotechnology, novel catalytic materials and biochar for environmental applications.
Dr. Dong has published more than 410 research and review articles in leading international journals, 7 book chapters, and edited 6 special issues of scientific journals. His h-index ~44 and more than 9000 citation. He has won several scientific awards and grants from renowned academic bodies. Dr. Dong was in the “World’s Top 2% Scientist-Stanford University Releases List (2021, 2022)” for Environmental Sciences. He is a Fellow of International Bioprocessing Association.
Dr. Dong currently serves as Editor of Sustainable Environment Research, and he is Editorial Board Member of Bioresource Technology. He has also served as Guest Editor of Special Issues in Bioresource Technology, Environmental Pollution, Bioresource Technology Report, Catalysts, and Applied Sciences.
Deirdre has been with Elsevier where her experience in scholarly communications developed over 20 years spans across a variety of publishing roles within Life, Social and Physicals Sciences. Since 2013 Deirdre has managed some of Elsevier’s largest journals in Environmental Science, such as Chemosphere and Science of the Total Environment. She is currently responsible for some of the flagship journals in the field of Chemical and Environmental Chemical Engineering, including Chemical Engineering Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials and Water Research.
Through close collaboration with a team of almost 300 Editors and scientific societies, Deirdre pursues ways to ensure knowledge dissemination, open science and inclusion & diversity. Additionally, Deirdre facilitates and drives innovation across Elsevier’s journal portfolios to advance science with solutions that add value to researchers.
Deirdre has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Limerick, Ireland and has been living and working in Amsterdam since graduating in 2002.
Dr Lee's expertise includes bioenergy recovery from waste, membrane processes, sludge treatment, and microscale heat and mass transport processes. He was the Chair Professor of the National Taiwan University, the National Chair of the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, and is now the Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the City University of Hong Kong.
Dr. Lee was the President of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers and of the International Bioprocess Association, and has engaged in editorial works for renowned academic journals. Dr. Lee has published over 1,060 SCI papers with >56,000 citations (h=113, Google Scholar).
Professor Dato’ Ir Dr A. Bakar Jaafar, PEng, FIEM, FASc is a mechanical engineer by profession, an environmental scientist by specialisation, and a maritime expert by current pre-occupation. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia, the latter of which he was elected as the Vice-President (VP) of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in 2020 and re-elected as the current VP for the second term: 2022-24.
For 22 years over the period 1973-1995, he served the professional civil service of Malaysia and his last position was the Director-General of the Department of Environment 1990-95.
During his public service, he led Delegations of Malaysia to Inter-governmental Meetings including IMO FUND Protocol 1984, UNEP Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Stratospheric Ozone layer 1989, 3rd Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 1990.
After his retirement as Director-General in 1995, Dato’ Bakar was instrumental in setting the environmental agenda for Malaysia and the Region. In 1997, he was nominated by the Government of Malaysia, and served as Elected-Member of the Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf, UN Headquarters, New York (1997-2002) (2002-07) (2007-12), and as an Adviser to the National Committee on Continental Shelf, Malaysia.
Upon the completion of his assignment in New York, Prof. Dato’ Bakar has been appointed since 1 August 2013, as a Professor at the Faculty of Technology & Informatic Razak, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and on 3 January 2013, founded the UTM Ocean Thermal Energy Centre that promotes R&D&I and investments in Ocean Thermal Energy-driven development projects in Malaysia, and in the region, that easily fulfil all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.
As an authority in his field, he sat on the Board of Directors of public-listed and private companies, including Land & General Berhad, Alam Sekitar Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Enviro-LIFT Services Sdn Bhd, TUSB Sdn Bhd, PAIP Berhad, and during the period 2019-22, he was the Chairman of Malaysian Green Technology & Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). He continues to sit on the Board of Directors of Novaviro Technology Sdn Bhd, AGV Environment Sdn Bhd, Business Council for Sustainable Development-Malaysia (BCSD-M), VH Boiler & Energy Services Sdn Bhd, and PCA Climate Change Strategic Services Sdn Bhd.
Professor Ashok Pandey is currently Distinguished Scientist at the Centre for Innovation and Translational Research, CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, India and Executive Director (Honorary) at the Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability – India. His major research and technological development interests are industrial & environmental biotechnology and energy biosciences, focusing on biomass to biofuels & chemicals, waste to wealth & energy, industrial enzymes, etc. Professor Pandey is/has been Adjunct/Visiting Professor/Scientist in universities in France, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, China, South Korea, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Switzerland, USA, UK, etc and also in several universities several in India. He has >1650 publications/ communications, which include 16 patents, 110 books, >950 papers and book chapters, etc with h index of 125 and ~67,000 citations (Google scholar).

Prof. Tjandra Setiadi is currently a full professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Bandung, Indonesia. He was the Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies (PSLH), from 2007 – 2021, and the Centre for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Indonesia (CRECPI) from 2014 – 2018. He is a member of Board of Patron Indonesia Cleaner Production Centre (ICPC), His main research is in the application of bioprocess engineering in treating various industrial wastewater, biopolymer production, lignocellulosic enzyme, and bio-based products.
He is also a fellow of Faculty of Engineering (2019), University of Tokyo. He has engaged with various national, regional, and international collaborations and assignments. He is registered as a professional engineer in Indonesia and ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisation (AFEO) .
Prof. Daichao Sheng is a Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering and the Head of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) since 2019. Before his current role, he was a Professor of Geomechanics at the University of Newcastle Australia during 1997-2019.
His research interest spans computational geomechanics, unsaturated soils, frozen soils, transport geotechnics, and environmental geotechnics. He has developed novel computer models and applied these models to solve practical problems, including embankments on soft soils, high-speed rail geotechnical problems, and cold region geotechnical problems. He also holds a conjoint position at the Central South University in China. Prof. Sheng is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

Professor Huanting Wang is an Australian Research Council (ARC) Australian Laureate Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Energy-efficient Separation (2022-2023). He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and serves as Associate Editor of Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, and Executive Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Membranes.
He was the Founding Director of the Monash Centre for Membrane Innovation at Monash University (2018-2022), Associate Dean (International) of the Faculty of Engineering (2010-2011, 2014-2020), Associate Dean (International) of the Faculty of Information Technology (2014-2015), and Deputy Head of Department of Chemical Engineering at Monash University.
Prof Wang was a member of the ARC Future Fellowship Selection Advisory Committee (2011) and the ARC College of Experts (2012-2015). He served as a Board Member of the Membrane Society of Australasia (2014-2017) and the Council Member (and treasurer) of the Aseanian Membrane Society (2015-2019). His research focuses on advanced membranes and nanomaterials for gas separation, water desalination and purification, chiral separation, ion transport and separation, fuel cells and catalysis for energy applications.
Professor Zhiguo Yuan AM is Chair Professor of Urban Water Management at School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong. Prior to this role, he was Director of the Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB) at The University of Queensland.
He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and a Distinguished Fellow of the International Water Association. He was named as one of Engineers Australia’s Top 100 Most Influential Engineers for 2015, and appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2019. He was an Australian Laureate Fellow (2018-2022).
His research focuses on development of innovative solutions for urban water management through effective integration of fundamental science and applied engineering. His research areas include sewer corrosion and odour management, net-zero urban water systems, resource recovery from wastewater, integrated urban water management, and digital water.
He published over 500 fully refereed journal papers including papers in Nature and Science, and attracted over 45,000 citations, giving an h-index of 117 (GS, June 2023). He is a Clarivate Highly Cited researcher. He is the founder of three biotechnology businesses namely SeweX, Cloevis and Lodomat. He is Editor-in-Chief of Water Research X, a Gold OA sister journal of Water Research.
